Everything: six categories drawn as teal line icons, Beach clubs, Bars, Restaurants (selected), Spas, Gyms and Kids clubs

A membership is worth what members use. The app starts from what is relevant to each of them.

  • 3personas, each with a reason to open the app
  • 4tabs: Everything, Personalized, Favorites, Near me
  • 6categories, from beach clubs to kids clubs

Context.

Privilee calls itself the ultimate lifestyle membership: beach clubs, bars, restaurants, spas, gyms and kids clubs in the UAE, on one membership.

The problem, as the project put it in 2019: how do we enable our members to get the most out of their membership by helping them discover what’s relevant to them?

Three members. Three ways in.

Each persona needed something different from the same membership, and each need became a tab.

Near me as a list, with Toggle map view above the places
Persona card: Alex, works in a bank, photographed training in a gym

Works in a bank, lives in Abu Dhabi, trains every day. He needs a gym near him, wherever he is: Near me.

Favorites: the bookmarked places, each bookmark filled
Persona card: Mike, business executive, photographed at his laptop

A business executive in Dubai with a busy schedule. He wants the status of his regular beach club, tennis court and bar, not new offers: Favorites.

Personalized: More of what you like, then Previously Visited Places
Persona card: Alice, sales person, photographed on a beach with her daughter

In sales, in Dubai, with a little girl. Open to new places, as long as there is a kids club: Personalized.

Thinking mobile first.

The personas and the screens started on paper: who they are, what they would tap, and which tab answers them.

Pencil sketches on paper: persona phones for Alex, Monica and Mike, and early screens with filter tags
Sketches: the personas, and the first filter tags.
Six pencil wireframes: tabs labelled Everything, personalized, Favorite and Near me, a category grid, a list, You don’t have any preferences, a preference form, and a personalised list
Wireframes: the tab bar, the categories, the empty state, the preference form and the personalised list.

One home, four ways in.

Signed-in members land on the homepage; everyone else signs in first. From there, four tabs.

Only Personalized asks something back: with no preferences yet, it sends the member to set them once, then lists their places.

Everything else, one tap at a time.

  1. Teal, the line logo, and two fields.

  2. Everything: six categories drawn as teal line icons, Beach clubs, Bars, Restaurants (selected), Spas, Gyms and Kids clubs

Six categories, drawn as line icons.

  3. Everything | Restaurants: a two-column grid of places, each with a photograph, its area in Dubai and a bookmark
A place card: a rooftop lounge photograph, its name, Jumairah, Dubai, and an empty bookmark

Places in a grid, each with its area and a bookmark.

  4. Favorites: the bookmarked places, each bookmark filled

Bookmark a place to keep it. Tap the bookmark again to let it go.

  5. Near me as a list, with Toggle map view above the places

The places around you, as a list.

  6. Near me as a map of Dubai, with red pins from Pearl Jumeirah to Business Bay

Toggle map view puts the same places on Dubai.

Three first impressions.

The website’s landing page, in three directions: the same cabana by the sea, told three ways.

Landing page: too good to be true, in teal, beside a white cabana on a deck by the sea

Too good to be true, in the app’s teal.

Landing page: Live the five-star lifestyle everyday, on a pale sky, with place cards along the bottom and the cabana on the right

Live the five-star lifestyle every day, with places as cards along the bottom.

Landing page on charcoal: The membership that feels too good to be true, in teal, with the cabana photograph on the right

The membership that feels too good to be true, on charcoal.

What I take
from it.

The personas made the structure obvious. Alex, Mike and Alice wanted different things from the same membership, so the app gives each of them a way in instead of one long directory.

Personalized is the one tab that asks for anything, and it asks once.
